Now that Butterfly is installed your child can be left to use the laptop safely, knowing that they will be able to watch content on youtube, or play an educational game, or draw on sketchpad, and won't be exposed to any harmful content.
You can further protect your child by signing in to youtube on the laptop, then click on your profile image in the top right hand corner, and select 'Restricted Mode' and turn on the switch to activate it. When you turn on restricted mode, youtube limits the content that is shown to child safe content only. In order to maintain restricted mode, click again on your profile image in the top right hand corner and select the 'Restricted mode' option. At the bottom of the menu that appears is the text 'Lock Restricted Mode on this browser'. Click on that, and enter your password, and the Butterfly browser youtube will be restricted to safe content, and your child will not be able to change the setting.
Is Butterfly free of charge?
Butterfly is 'donation ware'. You can download and install Butterfly for free, but it is suggested that you make a donation to Butterfly's preferred charity, which is the butterfly cafe in Jersey in the Channel Islands, a project to help the recovery process for survivors of abuse.
Butterfly is simple to use. Just turn the laptop on, and it will connect to your wifi network, and display youtube. In the bar at the top of the browser are the two other allowed pages, abcya.com and sketchpad.io. These can be clicked on to visit those pages.

If you need to change the wifi network details, then press the following keys at the same time - ctrl - alt - w. This will bring up the network chooser. You can then choose your network and enter the password and Butterfly should connect to the network.
If you want to connect to the web using a cable, then plug in the cable, and press 'ctrl - alt - w'. This should activate the wired connection.
When using Butterfly, always shut down the laptop safely by clicking the power button to bring up the power off menu. You can also restart your session using this menu, which will return your laptop to its clean boot state.
The creators of Butterfly offer no guarantees as to the functioning of the laptop and accept no responsibility for the use of Butterfly. Butterfly is offered as is, and despite the best efforts to make certain that Butterfly will not display problematic content, the creators cannot guarantee with absolute certainty that no problematic content will be displayed.
That said, the system is designed to be as good as possible at preventing unsafe content from being displayed.
Is Butterfly guaranteed?
No. Butterfly comes with no guarantee to guarantee that it will work or will certainly provide safe content. The provision of safe content is managed by OpenDNS, and Youtube restricted mode.
